Urgent360

Stay informed, stay prepared with Urgent360: Instantly locate the nearest emergency room and real-time wait time.

Overview

This was my final group project for the boot camp, which asked us to research, prototype, test, and validate an idea for a mobile application that solves a clearly identified need in users’ everyday lives.

Our primary objective was to fulfill all of the project requirements as we worked together over the 2-week sprint to apply what we had learned in the program.

People in medical crises often find themselves flustered and unprepared when looking for emergency medical care. Typically, they will Google the closest open emergency room and end up waiting hours to be seen by a doctor.

Solution

Empathize

User Research

The first step in the UX process is to Empathize with the user. To achieve this, we conducted research to help us build a user persona. Our team prepared an interview script with 15 questions. Our research focused on three main topics:

1. What challenges have you faced when trying to locate medical assistance in an emergency?
2. Would people utilize a mobile application in an emergency situation?
3. What features would be helpful when facing these challenges in a crisis?

Research Insights

Many interviewees explained that in recent emergencies, they drove themselves to the emergency room due to the high cost of an ambulance.
They said they would likely utilize a reputable mobile application in a crisis.
Users also informed us that Emergency room wait time, distance to the emergency room, and storing medical records were the most important.

Research Methods

Our user research plan included 15 open-ended questions in remote interviews with five users and an online survey with 17 responses. We also reached out to 6 hospitals to inquire about their emergency room wait time, we received 4 estimates.

Conclusions

Our research showed us that

How might we create a solution so people can easily access information about emergency room locations and wait times to reduce stress during medical emergencies?

Define

We identified The Patient Wait and Doctr - ER wait times as our direct competitors. We liked that they both had ER wait times and business hours listed. The main weakness The Patient Wait had was that the information was crowd-sourced but had a small user base, so it was inaccurate. The main disadvantage that Doctr had was that it is only available in Canada.

We considered Qless an indirect competitor as it shows mobile queuing for many different types of businesses. Its main weakness is that it has bugs - users reviewed them, saying they often waited longer due to these issues.
